Ups and downs

I felt a little down this morning and shared my frustration with Bjørn. So he joined me for a walk. Brought my camera, and had a good time.

Hedge. Snow. Sky.

Rødenes Church

Winter still.

The beach.

Bet the trees long for spring.

When we came home, our neighbour-to-be was there with her dog, Buddy.

He came running through the snow as fast as his Corgi legs could carry him.

Quite a little charmer!

Fed the birds, photographed some of them. We have hordes.

After the walk we had lunch and did some things at home. Life was better by the time I went to bed....

Had a doc's appointment today. The ear infection still will not go away, and it is painful and bothersome. A new doc this time since my own was not available. He sent a requisition to a new specialist. I got an SMS later in the afternoon from the specialist, saying he had time to see me on March 27th. I will not be able to wait that long, so I will need to find another way. After the doc's appointment, I went for my walk in Ørje.

A quiet day. Walking 2 km down to beautiful Tjuvholmen.

A day by the sea.

Bjørn has been going to the beach alone for some days this summer, and I wanted to try to come with him. We have been a couple since 1991, and I can count on one hand the number of times we have gone to the beach. It has not been something we have wanted to do. So, it was a bit inspiring that Bjørn started to go now. No wonder that he did... for those who can swim, the beach seems like the only sensible place to be this summer.

Anyway, my fear of water was back, that was clear. I spent the first couple of hours safely on the beach, just enjoying the sun and being a little annoyed that the water scared me so much. But then I overcome my fear and went out into the water. I survived. With some encouragement from Bjørn, and his steady hands, I could lie down and also have my head under water. I am not at where I can let go of him, and I am miles away from swimming, but it was quite a victory for me just to do this. We did have a fun day on the beach and I can even imagine going back, and we hope to do so in a few days.

In the car on our way home, we got a text message from the real estate agent. The ones who looked at the house had a made bid. It was 150.000 less than the asking price and it will get us into trouble if we accept. BUT it will mean getting rid of the house, which means so much for my health.

We spent the evening discussing what to do. I wanted to accept the offer since this might be our only chance to sell. Bjørn did not want to accept the offer since it will mean we will be left with nothing after the sale. Discussion turned into heated argument. I have made so many decisions against Bjørn's will in this sale's process, so it was on time for him to get his way. We turned the offer down, and I was not a happy camper.

From Oslo to Fredrikstad

We had breakfast at the hotel in Oslo, and then left. We wanted to be together another day, but were not sure what we wanted to do. After talking a bit in the car, we landed on going to Fredrikstad and sleeping over there.

We have used the old Fredrikstad hotel a few times before, and it is a nice place to be. Bjørn went shopping for clothes there, and In the evening we went to the pub we were at the last time we were here. We spent a very relaxing, nice evening there. I still have a good feeling about my 49th year.

49 seems good

If this day is anything to judge by, 49 will be a good year.

I went to the dentist today. I had found a new one in Askim, and it was my first time there. He was a very nice, very skilled and the visit there was quite enjoyable. I will go back in October for a check.

Then I went to work, tidied my desk and talked with those who were there today. I also took a picture of the cakes my pupils make for Eid. They look like small bird nests and taste sweeter than the sweetest thing you can possibly imagine.

After a while I got quite a headache, so I was tempted to just go to Ås and go to bed. But I had promised myself to go for a little walk and enjoy the sun, so I drove to Trollbergtjern, went for a little walk, and sat in the sun and read a little. Such a lovely day.

I was glad I decided to go, even though the headache never really subsided. It was good to be out.

Sunday 22 April 2018

Espen and Anja were showing their house today. That is, their real estate agent was showing the house while we all left it. I met Bjørn in Askim, and after a bit of back and forth, we decided to drive along the coast at a place where we have not been before. We drove by Son where we HAVE been before. In some ways charming, but charming in the same way that Turkish cakes are sweet. Must be heaven for Stepford wives, but we moved on. Then I saw a sign pointing towards Hvitsten. I remembered a pupil of mine talked warmly of it, so we followed the sign. Hvitsten was a little like Son, but they had a coastal route that could take you to Drøbak if you headed north and to Moss if you headed south. We headed south. It was a nice route, and we would have walked longer if it had not been for me not having dressed properly. It was bloody cold. Eventually back to Askim where I switched to my own car, and drove back to Ås.

Would be nice to walk the coastal route from Drøbak to Moss one time. But that might take more than a day.

Halden revisited

Started the day at the doc's office. After half an hour there, I met up with Bjørn who had driven me, and we went to Bakergården for breakfast and a coffee. That is always nice, and food is always excellent. And then we drove to Halden a favoured destination. And in Halden, the fortress. We wanted to walk a little bit and to take pics. We found a throdden path we had not followed before, and a sign that said "The shielded path". So cool that there is still more to explore at the fortress! We went ahead, and were very much shielded by the thick fortress walls. But then the wall to the right was replaced by a great view over Halden town.

We walked on to more familiar parts of the fortress, and took some pictures along the way.

Then we drove downtown and parked. And just like on Thursday, Bjørn saw a woman he knew (not the same one), and we stopped to have a long and nice chat. Then - a new cafeteria, a new cup of coffee and a small lunch. On the way home we stopped at a place I wanted to explore. And what do you know, we found a perfect new forest path along a frozen, snowy lake. Now everything is just shades of white and grey, but it must look amazing in sping and summer. Benches everywhere, so no doubt we have not been the first to think that. We met a couple with two fantastic dogs and talked with them for a while. They told us the path would take us all the way to the hilltop on the other side of the lake. We have to do that, it looked like a perfect place to go. It will be 20 km or more, so needs to be warmer than today, or we need to be better dressed. I took some pictures along the way. most of them naturalistic ones, but a few just to be artsy :P

We drove home, Bjørn spent ten minutes inside, and then he drove back to Halden for a Red Cross meeting. I stayed at home, ticking things off my list.

A good day

Another round with friendly shock wave treatment. This time I was up to over 3 bar and I started to feel it a little. I have a lot more to go on though. I also got new exercises to do at home.

After the treatment we drove to Moss, got Bjørn a belated Christmas present and had lunch and coffee at a cafeteria there. I was not quite ready to face the perils of home, so Bjørn suggested a drive to Halden. I wish Halden was closer to where I work; I like it there. In Halden we stopped at the fortress. We have been there several times before, but then we have always walked up to the main part of the fortress. We have seen there is a path leading away from it, but have not cared to explore it. This time we did. We soon bumped into a funny dog scuplture, and as we walked on, we came across a path one could walk down the steep hillside and to the center of Halden. What we also came across was another section of the fortress. This part of the fortress had been occupied by the Swedes under the leadership of their King Karl the 12th. King Karl is one of two Swedish warrior Kings. And right here, with the Swedes holding this one part of the fort, he was shot and killed on November 30th 1718. There is a big memorial monument there for him raised by both Norwegian and Swedes. On our way back to the car, Bjørn saw a fellow Red Cross member, so we stopped for them to have a chat. Then back to a warm car, and driving home. We shopped for groceries on the way, came home, made dinner and relaxed. Evening came and regardless of the sleep meds, insomnia hit. I was awake till 3am.

I only had a cell phone with me today, but took some pictures with it.

Mines and sushi

Went to Askim to get take-away sushi. A bit to wait, so we drove around for half an hour. And we found the Romsåsen mines, which I have been wondering about. That area was cooler than I thought it was be.

Sushi took longer than we thought, and by the time we got home, we were hungry. Good thing then that the sushi was excellent.

Kuvauen, Hvaler

Last day at the Hvaler cottage today. It has undoubtedly been one of the best weeks of my life. I can't remember when I last was this relaxed and happy. A sad contrast to what it has been like to live at home for the last year. We relaxed to the max in the sun for as long as we could, cleaned the cottage to make it ready for its next visitor, and left. But on the way home, we stopped at Kuvauen, where we had not been before. We debated weather or not to stop there for some final sightseeing, or to drive straight home. We were both happy we decided to stop. It was beautiful there, and the wonderful holidays was extended with a few hours.

We were home at around 6pm, and the rest of day was spent doing practical things, and then relaxing. And suddenly it was 3am!

Wildlife, Hvaler

Been here for six wonderful days. and it has been pure perfection. Every second of this stay has been good, and has contributed to balance, relaxation and joy. So many special moments, and many of them because of the exceptional wildlife here.

Today we met a male deer, and we have seen many more birds that we do not have where we live. Like the Common Eider. These are Bjørn's photos; his camera is brilliant when you need to zoom fast.

Had an SMS from Anne today. She told me that the two friends of her that we met when we visited her, had continued to think about us, and deeply sympathised with what we have gone through this last year. So if we need it, they are offering us a temporary home till we are able to buy a house. People can be so good.

Wednesday 26 July 2017

Rødshue, Hvaler

The beautiful nature at Rødshue, We had not been to that part of Hvaler earlier. A sculpture Park. A stone cross to mark 1000 years of Christendome in Norway. Another perfect day.

Back at the cottage, we had dinner and laid plans for the few days that are left of the holidays. I had to ask Anja for something related to those plans. The chat with her took an unexpected turn, and suddenly I had made other, scarier plans as well. Goodness.

Tuesday 25 July 2017

Skjærhalden, Hvaler

Just enjoying the cottage and relaxing. Reading, tanning, relaxing. Wonderful. The day went by just as smoothly as this ship that sailed by.

Walk and visitors at Hvaler

Lovely, lazy day. Slept long and had a late breakfast. Had an SMS from Geir, who occupies the desk next to me at work, and who has been a great support through what has been a difficult year. He wondered if he and his wife could drop by and visit us at the cottage. Of course they could.

After breakfast, Bjørn and I went for a walk up the hill right next to the cottage, and enjoyed a nice view of the archipelago. The one we live in is the one with a veranda that has a view to the sea.

On the beach

Bjørn went to buy groceries, so we could feed our guests. Geir and Marianne who had planned to drop by and say hi, stayed till 9.30 pm. Time flies fast in good company. Not only do I love my work place and the job in itself; it comes with so many exceptional people that have become good friends.

Sunday 23 July 2017

Sun, sea birds and social life

Woke up to beautiful sunny weather. Have been out on the veranda the whole day. Our friend Erik is a bus driver, and his route goes out to this place, so he had his break here today. Short visit, but so nice to talk to him.Irene was already here when he came, she spent the whole day here. So good to have entire day out in the sun, and with good people!

And the birdies were right there. This place gives the best photo opportunities!

Saturday 22 July 2017

Relaxing to the max

A day in the sun. Tanning, reading, watching the birds. Ending the day with a glass of my favourite red wine. I already feel so much better.

Going to Hvaler

Had a quiet start of the day and packed our bags to go to Hvaler. Hvaler is one of the places to have a cottage and be seen over the summer holidays if you are rich and successful. It is stunningly beautiful there, and there is a rich plant- and birdlife; parts of which can only be seen on Hvaler. To rent a cottage there for a week costs more than it would for me and Bjørn to spend several weeks abroad. It is not a place I could afford to stay if it had not been for the fact that my work has access to a cottage there, and it is very affordable to rent it through work. We picked up the key in Askim at 5pm as the agreement is, and drove straight to Hvaler.

We parked among all the show-off cars, and found the cottage. It looked like a cottage on the outiside, but inside it was a mini-house with all the equipment one could possibly wish for.

We went for a short stroll once we had settled in.

The cottage:

The Lady by the Sea:

Weather was great, and in the evening we sat on the porch with a beer. It was so relaxing, and after a short while, all the stress of the last year left my body. That made me realise to which extent the stress had physically manifested itself. The chest pain went away, the aching shoulders, the tenseness. It was good beyond words.

A perfect day

I took today off work. I have worked a lot lately, and most of it I have taken out as pay, but I also have a few hours that I can take as time off. Today I had to go to Sarpsborg to fetch a thing I can use for self-treatment at the state treatment central. Bjørn was my designated driver, and though I lead him astray at first, we eventually found the place we needed. Having had the thingy handed over, we were back in the car. It was noon, and since I had a day off, we wanted to do something with it. After a bit of pondering, we decided to go to Halden. It was Bjørn's idea, and it was a brilliant one. Halden is my favourite town in this county. I would not mind moving somewhere close to Halden.... Off we drove. We strolled around in Halden, and took some pictures. These are taken by Bjørn.

When weather went from sunny spring to hail-ridden winter, we found a place to have coffee - a very atmosphereic place with very good coffee: Bryggerihuset.

When we drove home from Halden, we chose the scenic route, which made for a very nice trip. And we stopped in Ski to go to the mall there. Bjørn who is now very active in Halden's Red Cross, and who will soon spend and outdoor training weekend with them, needed some equipment and some boots. I needed some clothes. So we did a bit of shopping, and we both found what we hoped to find.

On our way home we saw what we usually see: Wildlife. But this time Bjør had his zoom ready!

Home late, after what feels like a holiday!

Having Astri over

Astri came for a visit today. We met in Ørje, and went to the infamous Bakergården for lunch. Then we did a bit of grocery shopping before we went home. Said hi to Bjørn who was on his way out to another Red Cross course, put the groceries away , and then drove to a forest path. Walked for nine km, and then drove back home where we chatted the evening away. Astri left at 9.30 pm, and half an hour later Bjørn came home from his course.

Astri brought Brando with her, and it was nice to be around a dog again. I miss that.

Brando enjoyed the great outdoors.

And back home he enjoyed a big of destruction.
